Morocco is a major global tourist destination and will be the reference destination for sustainable development in the Mediterranean by 2020. A positioning based on its value ecological, landscape and cultural heritage will allow it to reach 20 million tourists per the Vision 2020 for the tourism sector, designed to showcase the potential of each region in the Moroccan Kingdom and promote environmentally-friendly tourism.
However, the awareness of stakeholders throughout the tourism value chain and tourists is an indispensible condition to meet this challenge.
The vision of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection is to accompany this challenge through education and environmental awareness of tourist accommodations stakeholders by establishing the Green Key label.
Launched by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in 2002, Green Key is a label of international importance. With 2,400 certified facilities in 53 countries, it is the largest of its kind in the world. It is supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Tourism Organization (WTO). It is the first international network of ecological tourist accommodation, the criteria, the award procedure and to convey the values are identical and binding in each member country, with some specific adaptations for each.
