The Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection was established in June 2001, at the initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa was entrusted with the Chair from the beginning.

The Foundation's fundamental mission is to raise awareness and educate for sustainable development.

In this mission, the Foundation targets all audiences, including school children, political and economic decision-makers as well as the general public.

The Foundation's action agenda is based on the commitments made by Morocco at the Rio Summits of 1992 and 2012, and the Johannesburg Summit of 2002.

Morocco incorporated these commitments into its Charter for the Environment and Sustainable Development, its Framework Law and subsequent National Strategies. It is part of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Program and its Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the African Union's Agenda 2063.

For the 2025 edition, 45 beaches had submitted their applications, illustrating the growing interest of coastal communities in this label, recognized for its contribution to sustainable tourist attractiveness and the promotion of territories.
