Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean (IBRM)

The Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean (IBRM) aims to promote sustainable development in the area straddling Morocco and Spain on either side of the Strait of Gibraltar.

Two shores for the environment

Biosphere reserves are sites designated by national governments and recognized by UNESCO as part of its Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program to promote sustainable development based on the combined efforts of local communities and the scientific community.

They illustrate how to reconcile conservation of natural and cultural diversity with economic and social development. They enable innovative approaches to sustainable development to be tested.

There are currently 621 biosphere reserves in 117 countries.

The Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean (IBRM), established in October 2008, covers nearly one million hectares, shared almost equally between Morocco and Spain.

In Morocco, the IBRM is spread over seven provinces: Chefchaouen (32% of the total area of the IBRM), Tetouan (28%), Larache (23%), Ouezzane (10%), Fahs-Anjra (5%), Mdiq-Fnideq (2%), Tangier-Assilah (0.21%). The IBRM is home to numerous natural ecosystems.

Implementation

A committee coordinates IBRM stakeholder actions. An agreement between the Foundation and these actors was signed.

Partners mobilized are : The Agency for the Promotion and Development of the Prefectures and Provinces of the North, The Water and Forests Authority, The General Directorate of Local Authorities, The Tangier Mediterranean Special Agency, The National Railway Office, The National Highway Company of Morocco.
