Part of the training and support activities of the partners of the “clean beaches” program and in parallel with the launch of the “Blue Flag” call for summer 2023, the technical workshop “Blue Flag” was organized in collaboration with the General Directorate of Local Authorities, on Thursday December 22nd, 2022, at the Hassan II International Centre for Environmental Training, academic arm of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection.
This workshop, with the participation of more than 100 representatives from coastal local authorities, economic partners, and administrations in charge of coastal management, aims to inform, train, sensitize and support, especially coastal municipalities, to strengthen the implementation of beach certification criteria with international standards required for the “Blue Flag” label and to gather feedback from the various stakeholders for dissemination at the national level.
Thus, the actions carried out by the Foundation and its partners on the beaches (DGCT, National Laboratory of Studies and Pollution Monitoring under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Development National Laboratory of Studies and Tests, Ministers of Equipment and Water, Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the General Directorate of the Moroccan Red Crescent Civil Protection, National Federation of Moroccan Scouting, economic partners and environmental experts) on monitoring bathing water quality, health coverage and beach safety, accessibility to people with special needs, cleaning and protection of sensitive natural sites, and good practices in environmental awareness and education were discussed.
Participants stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation and coordination between all stakeholders at the local level to (i) achieve maximum coverage of health, hygiene, safety and accessibility on beaches and (ii)) to raise awareness among municipalities and summer residents for the sustainable development of seaside resorts.
