On the occasion of World Environmental Education Day, celebrated on October 14, the Hassan II International Center for Environmental Training hosted a hybrid conference under the theme « The Importance of Environmental Education in Schools: The Educator’s Role as a Catalyst for Change. » This event highlighted the crucial role of environmental education as a driver of transformation, emphasizing the fundamental responsibility of educators in imparting ecological values to future generations.
The conference brought together renowned experts from prestigious national and international organizations, including the global WEEC network, represented by its Secretary General, the UNESCO, through an education program specialist, and Morocco’s Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports, represented by the Director of Curricula. Their presentations explored key topics, such as the importance of holistic and transdisciplinary education to foster sustainable competencies in students and teachers, international educational partnerships within the Green Education initiative using UNESCO guides, and the integration of environmental themes into school curricula to enhance both pedagogical capacities and students’ civic responsibility through a curricular approach.
A highlight of the event was an interactive workshop dedicated to designing sustainable educational projects and sharing best practices among participants. This session enabled educators to brainstorm innovative initiatives for their institutions while benefiting from the experiences of their peers. Collaboration and the exchange of ideas were central to this workshop, laying the groundwork for more impactful and practical environmental education in students’ daily lives.
The day also featured a demonstration of digital tools developed by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection through its Hassan II International Center, including the « Ana Boundif » app and the « Classe Verte »application. The latter was presented by a teacher from Abdelmoumen School, part of the Goi Peace twinning program, alongside two students who shared their personal experiences. The educator showcased the platform’s use for teachers, while the students highlighted its engaging and educational nature.
With 240 participants attending both in person and online, the event underscored the educational community’s strong commitment to enhancing its environmental education skills, reaffirming the role of teachers as true agents of change.
