These criteria, which turn around the savings of water and energy, the waste management, the environmental awareness, green procurement, etc. have broadened this year to social criteria. This extension, introduced by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), the global organization in charge of the label, is in line with the commitment of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental protection, which obtained its label of Responsible Association in 2016.

The application files of hoteliers to the label, filled on-line on a dedicated website, are increasingly successful, showing a good consideration, at a much earlier stage, of the environmental issues. In Marrakesh, where the city accounts 34 labeled establishments, the hoteliers have approached the Foundation to acquire products from the agro ecology within the framework of safeguarding and Protection of the Palm grove of Marrakesh program.

Green key, the first Eco label in the world

Green key was launched by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in 2002. With 2400 certified establishments in 53 countries, it is the most represented label in the world. It is supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

In Morocco, where it was introduced by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental protection in 2007, the label is attributed every year by an independent jury composed of experts in connection with the tourist activity. This jury consists of the Ministry of Tourism, the Moroccan National office of tourism, the National Hotel Industry Federation, the Ministry Delegate to the Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment in charge of Environment, the National Office of Electricity and Water, the Agency for the development of the Renewable energy and Energy efficiency and the Directorate-General for local authorities.
