Exploring Biodiversity: Eco-School Students on a immersive journey Through Rabat’s Zoological Garden

As part of the awareness initiatives led by the Hassan II International Center for Environmental Training, more than 200 students from Eco-Schools recognized at the 2024 Best Practices Contest “Once Upon a Time, an Eco-School” had the unique opportunity to delve into the heart of Moroccan biodiversity through an immersive experience at the National Zoological Garden of Rabat From January 21st to February 27th, 2025.

These inquisitive young minds embarked on a journey through time by exploring the zoo’s museum, a fascinating space that showcases the history of species that once inhabited Morocco millions of years ago. As they stood before fossils of long-extinct animals and listened to the captivating insights of experts, they gained a deeper understanding of the evolution of the country’s wildlife heritage and the critical connections between environmental changes and species survival. A scientific film further enriched their experience, offering a striking perspective on conservation challenges and the vital role they can play in protecting ecosystems.

Guided by specialists, they then discovered the captivating world of the zoo’s animals, closely observing their behaviors, dietary habits, and the meticulous care provided by zookeepers. Through engaging discussions, they grasped the significance of each species within its ecosystem, the delicate balance of nature, and the growing threats to biodiversity. An educational game challenged them to test their knowledge about endangered species, ecosystems, and Morocco’s unique wildlife, including its endemic species. This interactive experience helped them assimilate essential concepts about nature conservation and the pressing need to protect biodiversity.

Their journey continued with an exploration of the zoo’s five major ecosystems, representing Morocco and Africa’s diverse natural environments: the Atlas Mountains, the Desert, the Savannah, the Wetlands, and the Tropical Forest. As they moved through these meticulously recreated habitats, they developed a stronger appreciation for the need to protect natural environments and ensure the survival of the species that depend on them.

By discovering wildlife and the ecosystems that sustain it, these students leave with a renewed sense of responsibility toward nature conservation. This enriching experience deepens their commitment and will inspire the best practices they will continue to foster within their Eco-Schools and communities, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
