As in previous years, the Foundation’s two Education for Sustainable Development flagship programs, Eco-Schools and Young Reporters for the Environment, kick off the 2022-2023 edition with capacity building workshops and Green Flag award ceremonies in each of Morocco’s twelve regional education and training academies where the programs are deployed.
Three-day sessions are held in each region by the Hassan II International Center for Environmental Training, which operates these programs in Morocco, in partnership with the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports.
The first day is devoted to Eco-Schools workshops and the second day to Young Reporters for the Environment workshops. The three day session concludes with the Green Flag Award Ceremony, recognizing schools for Eco-School program achievements.
Building skills
The workshops’ primary goal is to train supervisors in the methodology of both education for sustainable development programs.
These workshops present all seven-step Eco-Schools processes and areas addressed, including: water and energy management, waste management, healthy eating, and biodiversity preservation.
The 2022-2023 YRE program theme of “Environmental Pollution: Our Planet Suffocates, Let’s Do Something About It!” is presented and discussed. Media experts also help enhance young contestants and mentor skills in writing, photography and video reporting for the YRE competition.
Experience exchange
The workshops are also an opportunity for regional and provincial coordinators and supervisors from various academies to share experience, impart know-how to those who are new to the program, thereby ensuring program continuity and broadening the common experience.
Sharing and openness
The workshops are a time of pride and camaraderie that culminates in formal Green Flag ceremonies, attended by authorities, jury members, teachers and students. Parents and civil society organizations, notably NGOs active in supporting young participants throughout the year, are invited to attend these ceremonies.
Openness is inherent to these programs’ philosophy, aimed at making children aware of their immediate environment and at propagating environmental actions that save the planet.
