The Clean Beaches Program aims to protect seas and oceans

The Clean Beaches Program aims to protect seas and oceans

The 22nd season of Clean Beaches aims to raise awareness among Moroccans of the need to protect seas and oceans, especially from plastic pollution.

The Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection chaired by Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa is mobilized again this summer 2021 to fight against the pollution of seas and oceans by plastic waste.

While Moroccans are returning to the beaches in compliance with the sanitary measures still in force, such as social distancing, barrier gestures, wearing masks, the Foundation plans to implement its #bharblaplastic campaign, launched in 2019, throughout the 105 beaches of its Clean Beaches Program.

The Foundation’s #bharblaplastic operation was a real success thanks to the commitment of its partners and the motivation of the participants. In 2020, the initiative received the Best Environmental Education Practices Award among the 4425 Blue Flag labelled beaches worldwide.

For the summer of 2021, this awareness-raising operation will replicate the three main highlights of the first edition: mobilize one million young people over the summer period, engage in 10,000 awareness-raising and education actions on sustainable development with them, and finally collect 10 tons of plastic per beach during the summer season. Diving associations will raise awareness of plastic waste in the seabed among young people in the Eco-Schools, Young Reporters for the Environment and Green Universities Network programs. Competitions and virtual challenges will also be organized to mobilize young people around the #bharblaplastic operation.

Lastly, this year, the plastic waste collected on the beaches will be reprocessed, a logical step in the circular economy: in addition to avoiding the pollution of the oceans, the plastic waste collected will have a new life after being reprocessed in the recycling units that have voluntarily taken part in this operation.

The #bharblaplastic operation, a remarkable awareness-raising action, has just been included in the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) launched by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), which the Foundation has joined as a founding member of the alliance that leads the commission worldwide.

For the past 20 years, the Foundation has continued to advocate for the beaches, coastlines, seas and oceans, which play a vital role in preserving the climate.
