Youth Voices for the Nationally Determined Contribution.
Aware that young people’s perspectives are vital for climate action, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, under the effective presidency of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, has launched an ambitious initiative to include Moroccan youth in the development of the Nationally Determined Contribution 3.0 (NDC 3.0), emphasizing that youth input is “invaluable” to this process.
In this effort, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, in partnership with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of National Education Preschool and Sports, and with support from GIZ, organized three key phases:
- Online training for over 800 youth: On April 30, more than 800 middle school, high school, and university students joined an interactive webinar led by the Foundation and the Ministry to present the main steps of the NDC process, the priorities of NDC 3.0, mitigation and adaptation challenges, and the role each citizen—especially youth—plays.
- Consultation with over 700 submissions: Over two weeks, the Foundation invited youth to complete one of two surveys ; middle/high school or university versions). More than 700 responses were collected, covering sectoral priorities (energy, agriculture, transport), local climate impacts, and citizen action proposals.
- National restitution workshop: On May 20, at the Hassan II International Centre for Environmental Training, over 150 youth representatives from all 12 regions of Morocco met in thematic groups (mitigation, adaptation, socio-economic dimension, technological innovation) facilitated by staff from the Foundation, the Ministry, and GIZ.
These youth contributions will be incorporated into Morocco’s forthcoming Nationally Determined Contribution.
