The Clean Beaches program extended from the Let our beaches Smile Operation, launched in 1999 by Her Royal Highness The Princess Lalla Hasnaa, who wanted the internationally coveted Blue Flag to be hoisted on Moroccan beaches. In Morocco, this Eco Label is managed by the Foundation for Environmental Education and is recognized by the World Tourism Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme.

The Nador region, which has experienced significant development in recent years, also receives a growing number of vacationers whose environmental impact is non-negligible, particularly on the Nador lagoon. The success of local tourism depends on its ability to protect itself from potential damage from tourism by using a sustainable development approach.

For the sake of upgrading beaches and preserving wetland wealth including the Nador Lagoon, the workshop helps raise awareness about the interactions between beach and lagoon management by promoting good environmental practices. This activity is part of the project to support the implementation of a comprehensive pollution control and protection of the Nador Lagoon.

National and international experts were mobilized to present their experiences to local stakeholders on the conservation and management of beaches and wetlands, including techniques for the conservation, protection, development, and environmental monitoring of these areas, and communication to users and tourists.

The workshop presents ways to improve planning, management, analysis and display of bathing water quality results, and strengthen the coordination of various stakeholders.

This event provides a good opportunity to discuss elements necessary for sustainable beach and wetlands management and consolidate the actions of managers involved in the issue.
