National Days of Coastal Protection Awareness

National Days of Coastal Protection Awareness

From December 19 to 25, 2011 the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection is organizing awareness days on coastal protection in partnership with various stakeholders involved in coastal management. These events are part of the International Coastal Conference recommendations held in Tangier in October 2010, chaired by Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, President of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection.

The events will take place according to a methodology that will enable the synergy of
concurrent actions in order to ensure the event’s visibility and success necessary to guarantee wide support from different target audiences.

The activities marking the celebration will be held in different cities of the Kingdom (extension and awareness workshops for schools, establishment of environmental clubs especially in rural schools, presentation of technical documents to promote awareness such as aerial photos, etc.).

The following is also planned:

– visits to high-value bio-ecological and environmental sites, such as the Marchica, Moulay Bouselham, Merja Zerga, and Oualidia lagoons and the Dakhla Bay and protected coastal areas (Al Hoceima and Souss Massa National Parks);

– Open House days to exhibit photographs of lighthouses in Rabat, Casablanca, El Jadida and Cap Spartel and various models (Oualidia, Dakhla, Marchica lagoons, etc.) and posters on endemic species (monk seal, etc.).

The organizers have planned other symbolic actions such as planting “ganivelle” wooden beach fencing for dune fixation on the Mehdia coast and a used bag collection campaign along the coastal areas.

Lastly, workshops are also planned concerning the presentation of the bill on the coast, and capacity building for associations and press correspondents that will be led by the departments in charge of these issues.
