Introductory note – National Days for the Coast

1)- Introduction

The Coastal Conference held in Tangier in October 2010 under the presidency of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, resulted in a number of recommendations, including the organization of Days for the Coast designed to raise awareness for the protection of our coastal heritage.

2)- Objectives of the Days for the Coast

1- Raise awareness of the dangers facing the coast and their impact on our environment;
2- Initiate and disseminate a culture of coastline conservation.
3)- Methodology
To mark this celebration, activities will be held in different cities of the Kingdom, such as conducting workshops for schools, establishing new environmental clubs especially in rural schools, and exhibiting aerial photos.

The following will also be organized:

– visits to high-value bio-ecological and environmental sites (Marchica, Moulay Bouselham, Merja Zerga, and Oualidia lagoons, and the Bay of Dakhla) and coastal protected areas (Al Hoceima and Souss Massa national parks) are also programmed;

– Open house days to exhibit photographs of lighthouses located in Rabat, Casablanca, El Jadida and Cape Spartel; scale models (Oualidia, Marchica and Dakhla lagoons); and posters on endemic species (monk seal, etc.).

Other specific activities are planned, such as planting “ganivelle” wooden beach fencing for dune fixation on the Mehdia coast or a campaign to collect used bags along the coastal areas.

Workshops concerning the presentation of the bill on the coast and capacity building for associations and press correspondents will be led by organizations.
