Celebration of the International Water Day : Awareness workshop “Learn to save and preserve water”

The Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection raised the awareness of sixty elementary, middle, and high school students on conserving precious water resources.

On World Water Day, celebrated every year on March 22nd since 1993, the Hassan II International Environmental Training Center (Center) and its partner National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) held an awareness day Monday, March 20, for the benefit of elementary, middle and highschool students from all over the Kingdom of Morocco.
His Majesty King Mohammed VI declared water a national priority in 2022 as the country faces its worst drought in over three decades. Citizens are called upon to contribute to general efforts to conserve this precious resource, and the Center gathered young people to raise their awareness on this challenge.

Indeed, as part of the Eco-Schools and Young Reporters for the Environment programs, which the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection has been running for two decades in partnership with the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports, youth from the cities of Rabat, Agadir, Marrakech, Beni Mellal, Sidi Slimane, Fez, Nador, Midelt, Tan-Tan, Laâyoune, Dakhla and Tétouan will be invited to visit ONEE’s installations in their region.

Presentations by the Center and ONEE sought to engage eco-schoolers and Young Reporters for the Environment in a debate and in finding solutions to rationalize water use in schools or preserve it from pollution. These efforts are carried out regularly in the Foundation’s Sustainable Development Education programs. Water is one of three top Eco-Schools program priorities and this year’s annual “Once Upon a Time an Eco-School” contest recognizes best water management practices. Similarly, the Young Reporters for the Environment contest has repeatedly featured water as a central annual theme. Both educational programs aim to raise young people’s awareness of water stakes and to instill eco-actions for its conservation.

Beyond Water Day, the Fondation’s different programs on Education for Sustainable Development raise the environmental awareness of thousands of children and young people every year during the school year, as well as during the summer season, with operation #b7arblaplastic, which exposes them to the problem of ocean plastic pollution.
