The Fondation Mohammed VI pour la Protection de l’Environnement, chaired by Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, held its National Workshop on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) on July 8, 2026, under the theme “Roots and Horizons: Anchoring Education for Sustainable Development to Build Tomorrow’s School.”

Organized within the framework of the Foundation’s strategic partnership with the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports, the workshop brought together regional and provincial ESD coordinators, in the presence of Mr. El Hussein Kadad, Acting Secretary General of the Ministry, alongside the directors of the Kingdom’s Regional Academies for Education and Training, united around a shared ambition: to firmly anchor environmental issues within Moroccan schools, from curricula to extracurricular activities.

A dual moment: taking stock and looking ahead

True to its title, the workshop combined a celebration of achievements with a forward-looking outlook, structured around four key pillars: reactivating the collective commitment of field actors, conducting an objective assessment of the 2025-2026 school year, ensuring full ownership of the new methodological guidelines specific to each ESD program, and jointly building an ambitious action plan for the 2026-2027 school year, in line with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The day opened with a plenary session on the current state of ESD in its international context, followed by an interactive workshop on success factors, and an afternoon collective-intelligence session in World Café format, addressing partnerships, curriculum integration, teaching tools, teacher training, and the sport-environment component.

The Eco-Schools Programme: a steadily growing momentum

The announcement of the 2025-2026 results of the Eco-Schools and Young Reporters for the Environment programme stood as the highlight of the day, confirming the strength of this nationwide momentum. Out of 831 applications received from schools across all regions of the Kingdom, 371 institutions were recognized following a rigorous two-stage evaluation process, regional assessments followed by a national evaluation conducted by a nine-member expert jury on June 18 and 19, 2026 at the Hassan II International Training Centre on Environment:

81 schools awarded the Bronze Certificate

112 schools awarded the Silver Certificate

106 schools awarded the Green Flag, the programme’s highest distinction

72 schools having successfully renewed their Green Flag

These results reflect the growing commitment of Morocco’s education community, students, teachers, administrative staff and families alike, to embedding the principles of sustainable development into everyday school life.

Looking ahead to 2026-2027

By the close of the day, participants had converged on a shared roadmap for the coming school year, complete with clearly defined indicators and responsibilities, and on strengthening a regional network of coordinators tasked with sustaining, collectively and durably, the ambition of a Moroccan school fully committed to the environment.
