This scientific expedition fell under the vast program of protection of the lagoon of Nador, said Marchica, launched in November 2008 by the Foundation. This program of safeguard, which deals with various programs and actions of protection and of sustainable development of the site, includes a dimension of fauna and flora safeguarding which is the main point of this scientific expedition.

22 experts worked overall 170 days for:

1. to determine the content of heavy metals and pesticides of the zones identified like sensitive,
2. to chart sea-beds,
3. the safeguard of the dune ridge of the lagoon,
4. the creation of artificial habitats for juvenile fish,
5. the valorization of saline of Kariat Arekmane.

The conclusions of the scientists will make it possible to safeguard furthermore this space unique in the Mediterranean by its size (14 000 hectares), its environmental function and its biodiversity.

The Foundation Mohammed VI for Environmental protection, under the chairmanship of Its Royal Highness the Princess Lalla Hasnaa, carries out this vast program of protection of the lagoon of Marchica. It consists in implementing directly on the territory devices of education and of public awareness to sustainable development and of reinforcement of the capacities and the tools of environmental monitoring and sustainable management.

The experience gained in this program in Nador made it possible for the Foundation to start another one similar in July 2011 to raise public awareness and promote sustainable development of the site of the Bay of Eddahab Wadi.
