The program of celebrations was organized from July 4 to 25 successively in the delegations in Guelmim Taouirt, Temara, Missour, Zagora, Chefchaouen, Nador, Larache, Safi, and ending in Marrakech where the students of Ibn Sina were awarded by the jury for their written work entitled “From a cemetery for the deceased to a welcoming living garden” and the Creativity Award for their photography “pain followed by hope.”

The 11th edition of the Young Reporters for the Environment has been a success, once again, with the participation of nearly 2,000 students from 230 high schools in 16 academies in the Kingdom. They delivered 130 written reports and 302 photographs, carefully considered by the jury. Seven written reports and six photographs were awarded.

The Grand Jury Prize was awarded to Mohammed Abdelkarim El Khattabi high school students in Nador, for their work “Kebdana Forest: 1,810 hectares in the past tense.” Mohammed El Idrissi High school students won the awareness award with their relevant question: “the Ras El Ma laundry site, heritage or a bane to the environment?” They tied with those of the Azzaytoune school in Taouirt, who wrote a paper entitled “Waste related to the Feast of Sacrifice: The Shovel and the Beast,” which is a play on words in French with Beauty and the Beast.

The variety of topics covered shows the students’ curiosity and sensitivity, from the “Bouizakarne greenbelt, a past that exudes prosperity and a present depleted of green (Hassan II Bouizakarne high school in Guelmim, prize for originality) to “Zagora between water deficiency and salinity” (Lycée Sidi Ahmed Bennacer, Zagora, awareness award) and a special mention to students of Mohammed VI Institute for Education and Teaching of the Blind for “the ocean through the blind’s eyes.”

The Young Reporters for the Environment program also awards photographs. The Ibn Sina high school students won the relevance award for their photograph entitled “Where to Flee?” and those from Salahuddin El Ayoubi high school won the award for originality with “Let’s dare to defy dirt.”

All winning photographs and reports are available in a traveling exhibition called “another look at the environment.” The Arsat Moulay Abdeslam gardens in Marrakech will host this exhibition until end September.

In Marrakech at the 7th World Environmental Education Congress organized by the Foundation chaired by HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa from June 9 to 14, 2013, an e-newspaper was prepared by 11 Young Reporters for the Environment from different schools in the Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz region. For five days, the young reporters relayed information for delegates and media, restoring the highlights of each day: plenary sessions, presentations, side events, exhibitions, etc.

The Young Reporters for the Environment competition, created by the Federation for Environmental Education (FEE), enables the Foundation, which has promoted the competition for eleven years in Morocco, to gauge how the sensitivity to environmental issues is evolving. This is a unique opportunity to perceive our environment through the eyes of those who have to manage the future.
