Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa,President of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection co-chairs with Patricia Espinoza, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC in Bonn, the high-level session dedicated to Education day under the theme “Global partnerships to combat climate change through education.”
Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, President of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, delivered on Thursday, November 16th, 2017, opening remarks during the Day dedicated to education carried by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change UNFCCC (UNFCCC) during COP23 held in Bonn (Germany), in the presence of Patricia Espinosa Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, Mr. Shyamal Majumdar, Director of the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training and Ms. Mereseini Vuniwaga, Minister of Women, Children and Poverty Reduction of Fiji.
In her speech, Her Royal Highness highlighted the importance of education for Sustainable development, as an essential lever today to modify in depth the behavior of citizens and face the challenges of global warming. This lever stated in the article 6 of the convention and the article 12 of the Paris Agreement both underline the importance of education, formation, public awareness, public access to information and international cooperation to effectively fight against climate change.
Indeed, the efforts made in the field of Education for Sustainable development have become the obligatory matrix of any action in favor of Environment. The difficulties, which confronted the governments to change current behaviors, lead to consider that education will rapidly induce the necessary inflection.
After its involvement during COP22 of Marrakesh, where Morocco openly pleaded for concrete action, particularly in Africa, the Foundation continues to build partnerships in Bonn, to strengthen its commitment.
Thus, on the Education Day and its high-level session co-chaired by Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, entitled “Uniting for Climate Education Further, Faster, Together through Partnerships “, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection and the UNFCCC signed a memorandum of understanding.
Both sides made a commitment to implement the Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) (article 6 of the UNFCCC) to cooperate, educate, form and raise public awareness on climate change through the translation of the guide of “Action for Climate Empowerment”. This guide intended for decision-makers proposes a clear plan in ten stages so as to give to the stakeholders the means to find and implement solutions to the climate change.
For reminder, since 2009, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection is a member observer of the UNFCCC, and participates every year in the COP through interventions and organization of side events.
